La Marzocco Linea PB Buying Guide: What Cafe Owners Need to Know

Written By Kanen Coffee Service Team

Written by the Kanen Coffee service team. We've installed Linea PBs in Bay Area cafes since 2011 and service them weekly. This is the guide we wish every cafe owner had before they signed the PO.

What the Linea PB Actually Is

The Linea PB is La Marzocco's volumetric-dosing workhorse. "PB" stands for Piero Bambi, son of the company's founder; it's the machine the modern third-wave coffee industry was built on. Saturated brew groups, dual boilers (one steam, one per-group brew), and PID temperature control. Available in 2-group ($22,050) and 3-group ($28,400) AV (auto-volumetric) and EE (manual paddle) configurations.

Who the Linea PB Is For

  • High-volume cafes — 150+ drinks/day. The dual boilers and saturated groups recover heat almost instantly between back-to-back shots.
  • Multi-barista shops — volumetric dosing means consistent shots across staff with mixed experience levels.
  • Cafes that prioritize uptime — PB parts are stocked at every major distributor in the US. Downtime is measured in hours, not days.
  • Operators who want to grow — adding a third group later is straightforward. The machine grows with the business.

PB vs Linea Classic — Which Should You Buy?

This is the most-asked question from Bay Area cafe owners. Short answer:

  • Linea Classic C ($12,730 / 2-group): tactile, paddle-actuated, beautiful design, lower price. Best if your baristas pull shots manually and you want the classic visual presence.
  • Linea PB ($22,050 / 2-group AV): volumetric programming, higher throughput, more consistent across staff. Best for high-volume shops where consistency > craft.

If you're under 100 drinks/day and care about the aesthetic / craft feel — Classic. If you're over 150 drinks/day or expect to scale — PB.

The Numbers You Actually Need to Plan For

  • Machine: $22,050 (2-group AV, base config)
  • Delivery + install: $400–$1,200 depending on plumbing
  • Required: water softener / filtration: $800–$2,500 (this is non-negotiable for warranty; we install)
  • Required: 220V dedicated circuit: $400–$1,500 depending on panel
  • Drain line: $200–$800
  • Grinder (sold separately, plan for it): Mythos 2 / Mahlkönig E65 / EK43, $2,500–$5,500
  • Realistic total to be operational: $26,000–$33,000

What Breaks & How Often

The PB is one of the most reliable commercial machines you can buy — but it's still a commercial machine running 6+ hours a day at temperature. After 12+ years of servicing them, here's what we see:

  • Group head gaskets — every 12–18 months at high volume. ~$80 in parts, 30 min labor.
  • Steam wand tip / valve seals — every 18–24 months depending on milk volume.
  • Solenoid valves — every 3–5 years.
  • Boiler scale / element life — heavily dependent on water quality. With proper softener: 10+ years. Without: 3–5 years before significant intervention.
  • PID / control board failures — rare, but happens. Plan for a board swap once in the machine's 15–20 year life.

Annual preventative maintenance is the single biggest factor in PB longevity. We offer service contracts for Bay Area cafes — see commercial repair.

Common Mistakes Cafe Owners Make

  1. Underspeccing the water system. Bay Area water is moderate, but not soft enough for unprotected commercial use. Skip the softener, and your warranty is void within 6–12 months.
  2. Buying the wrong configuration. AV vs EE is a workflow decision, not a price decision. Talk through both with our team before you commit — most cafes choose AV for volumetric consistency, but EE has loyal proponents who want manual control.
  3. Skipping staff training. The PB doesn't pull good shots by itself. Free training is included with every machine we sell.
  4. No preventative maintenance plan. A $400/year maintenance contract is cheaper than one emergency board replacement.
