Written by the Kanen Coffee service team. We're a Bay Area La Marzocco dealer and we install and service GB5s across the East Bay. This is the practical buyer's guide we wish every cafe owner had — what the machine actually is, who it's for, what it really costs to be operational, and what to expect over its life.
What the GB5 Actually Is
The GB5 S is La Marzocco's modern flagship commercial machine — a 2- or 3-group, dual-boiler, saturated-group machine with PID temperature control on each group independently. The "S" generation (current) keeps the iconic GB5 silhouette and adds modern electronics, easier serviceability, and per-group temperature profiles.
List price: $19,930 for the 2-group, $26,400 for 3-group (AV configuration).
Who the GB5 Is For
- High-volume specialty cafes — 200+ drinks/day where group recovery time matters between back-to-back shots.
- Multi-roast / multi-coffee programs — per-group PID lets you run one group hot for darker espresso and another cooler for filter / lighter roasts.
- Cafes that want both throughput AND craft — the GB5 is volumetric but also rewards careful barista work. It's the machine for shops that pull both speed and quality.
- Operators who care about the visual — the GB5 silhouette is iconic. It's a customer-facing centerpiece.
GB5 vs Linea PB — Which Should You Buy?
The two are often cross-shopped. Both are dual-boiler, saturated-group, La Marzocco machines. Real differences:
- Per-group PID: GB5 has it; PB doesn't. If you run multiple roasts or want to dial groups independently, GB5 wins.
- Aesthetic: GB5 has the angular flagship look; PB has the classic chrome-and-rectangular shape.
- Price: GB5 2-group is $19,930; PB 2-group AV is $22,050. GB5 is cheaper for the equivalent footprint.
- Service parts overlap: ~70% common parts between PB and GB5 — both are well-supported at every distributor.
If you want per-group temperature control or the iconic GB5 look at a lower price point, choose GB5. If you want maximum service-parts ubiquity and the traditional Linea silhouette, choose PB.
The Numbers You Actually Need to Plan For
- Machine: $19,930 (2-group AV, base config)
- Delivery + install: $400–$1,200 depending on plumbing complexity
- Required: water softener / filtration: $800–$2,500 (we install; non-negotiable for warranty)
- Required: 220V dedicated circuit: $400–$1,500 depending on panel
- Drain line: $200–$800
- Grinder (plan for it, sold separately): Mahlkönig E65 GbW / Mythos 2 / EK43, $2,500–$5,500
- Realistic total to be operational: $24,000–$31,000
What Breaks & How Often
After a decade of servicing GB5s in Bay Area cafes, here's what we see:
- Group head gaskets — every 12–18 months at high volume. ~$80 in parts, 30 min labor.
- Steam wand seals / tips — every 18–24 months depending on milk volume.
- Solenoid valves — every 3–5 years.
- Per-group PID temperature probes — occasionally fail at 5–8 years. The good news: per-group means one group failure doesn't take the machine offline.
- Boiler / heating element — heavily water-quality dependent. With proper softener: 10+ years. Without: 3–5 years.
Annual preventative maintenance is the biggest factor in GB5 longevity. See our commercial repair & service →
Common Mistakes Cafe Owners Make
- Skimping on the water system. Bay Area water isn't soft enough for unprotected commercial use. Without proper filtration, you'll see scale damage in months.
- Underestimating electrical. GB5 needs a dedicated 220V/30A circuit. Many older cafes don't have it; budget the electrician.
- Choosing 2-group when you need 3. If you're running 250+ drinks/day, the third group is worth it. Upgrading later costs more than buying the right machine first.
- No service contract. Reactive repair after a Saturday morning failure costs more than a year of preventative maintenance.
