We sell a lot of different espresso machines. We service even more. After years of watching machines come through our shop — seeing which ones hold up, which ones cause problems, which parts wear out, and which machines customers come back to thank us for recommending — we have formed strong opinions. The Lelit Bianca is at the top of our list for serious home baristas, and here is why.
The Repair-Informed Perspective
Most espresso machine reviews are written from a consumer perspective: how does it taste, how easy is it to use, does it look good on the counter. Those things matter. But we evaluate machines from a different angle: how is it built, what fails, how easy is it to fix, and how long will it last?
The Lelit Bianca (PL162T) scores exceptionally well on all of these metrics. After servicing dozens of Biancas over the years, we can tell you it is one of the most thoughtfully engineered home espresso machines on the market — and one of the most pleasant to work on.
Modularity: Designed to Be Serviced
The Bianca is designed with modularity in mind. Components are logically laid out, accessible, and replaceable without specialized tools or machine disassembly nightmares. The dual boilers are clearly labeled and easy to access. The pump, solenoid, and flow control valve are all field-serviceable. The group head uses standard-size gaskets that are inexpensive and widely available.
Compare this to some competing machines where the boiler is buried under 45 minutes of disassembly, or where proprietary components are not sold as individual parts. When we open a Bianca, we can see what Lelit was thinking: this machine was designed to be maintained.
Parts Availability: The Long-Game Advantage
This is where Lelit shines compared to many competitors. Lelit maintains parts availability for their machines for many years after production — often 8–10+ years. Virtually every component of the Bianca is available as a spare part: flow control paddle assembly, boiler elements, PID controller, pump, solenoid valves, brew group seal kit, steam valve, and more.
We can still get parts for Lelit machines from 2015. Try that with some consumer brands that discontinue components within 3 years of a model refresh. Long-term parts availability is the single most important factor in a machine's repairability — and for the Bianca, it is excellent.
The Flow Control Paddle: A Feature That Changes Everything
The Bianca's signature feature is the manual flow control paddle that sits above the group head. This allows you to control water flow rate — and therefore pressure — through the entire extraction process. You can ramp up slowly for pre-infusion, hold at a low flow rate to saturate the puck gently, then increase flow for the main extraction. You can profile shots in ways that extract differently from different coffees.
This sounds intimidating, but it does not have to be. Many Bianca owners start with the paddle fully open — essentially using it as a standard machine — and experiment with flow control as they develop their palate. The paddle adds capability without removing simplicity.
In our experience, flow control is one of the most significant upgrades you can give your espresso. It is the feature that makes a home machine feel like a commercial one.
Dual Boiler: No Compromises on Workflow
The Bianca runs a dedicated brew boiler and a dedicated steam boiler — both independently PID-controlled. This means:
- No temperature surfing or waiting between shots and steaming
- Precise, stable brew temperature regardless of steam demand
- Full steam pressure available immediately, any time
- Ability to pull a shot and steam milk simultaneously
Single-boiler machines require you to switch modes between brewing and steaming, and can have temperature instability at the transition. Heat exchanger machines are a middle ground but still have thermal management quirks. Dual boiler eliminates all of this. The Bianca delivers commercial workflow in a home-sized footprint.
Build Quality That Shows Up Over Time
The Bianca is built with brass boilers, stainless steel tubing, a stainless steel body, and high-quality fittings throughout. This is not the build quality of a mass-market consumer product — it is the build quality of a machine intended to last 15+ years.
We have seen Biancas that have been in daily use for 8–10 years come through our shop looking nearly new inside. A few gaskets, a pump, maybe a flow control service — and they are as good as the day they were built. That is what proper materials and construction look like over time.
What the Bianca Is Not
Honest caveat: the Bianca is not a beginner machine. It requires a capable grinder — ideally a single-dose or stepless grinder that can dial in espresso precisely. You cannot pair a Bianca with an entry-level grinder and expect great results. The machine will outperform your grinder.
It also requires water management. Use filtered water or the Lelit in-tank water softener. The dual boiler system is robust, but no machine is immune to the effects of hard water over time.
And it requires engagement. If you want a machine that pulls the same shot every day with minimal thought, a super-automatic might suit you better. The Bianca rewards attention and experimentation.
Who the Bianca is Perfect For
- Home baristas who are ready to take their espresso seriously
- Anyone upgrading from a single-boiler machine who has outgrown the limitations
- People who want a machine that will last them a decade or more
- Anyone who values the ability to repair and maintain their own equipment
- Coffee enthusiasts who want the tools to experiment with extraction
Our Recommendation
We recommend the Lelit Bianca with confidence because we have watched it perform — and we have watched it hold up over years of real use. It is the machine we would buy if we were setting up a home espresso station. It is the machine we recommend to customers who ask us what we would buy with a $1,500–2,500 budget.
