We talk to espresso machine owners every day who have been living with a problem for weeks — sometimes months — hoping it will resolve on its own. It usually does not. Most of these issues are entirely fixable, often for a reasonable cost, and catching them early almost always means a simpler, cheaper repair. Here are the five signs that tell us a machine needs professional attention.
Sign 1: Channeling — Your Espresso Is Uneven or Shooting Fast
Channeling happens when water finds a path of least resistance through your puck rather than flowing evenly. You will see fast, thin, pale espresso — sour and watery — with early blonding. Sometimes the water visibly punches through one spot in the puck.
Channeling can be a technique issue, but when a machine that used to pull perfect shots suddenly develops it with no change in your process, it usually signals a mechanical problem: worn shower screen, deteriorated dispersion gasket, low brew pressure from a worn pump or drifted OPV, or a clogged solenoid. These are all fixable — but require opening the machine.
Sign 2: Low Pressure — Shots Are Weak, Slow, or Running Under 6 Bars
Espresso extraction requires approximately 9 bars at the group head. When pressure drops significantly, shots run slow with no crema — or paradoxically fast, because low pressure cannot maintain resistance against a properly dosed puck.
What we typically find:
- Worn vibratory pump — Ulka EX5 pumps have a rated service life. After heavy use (3–7 years), output drops. New pump: $44 in our online store ($75 installed during a repair). Straightforward swap.
- OPV adjustment drift — the over-pressure valve can drift over time or after a knock. Recalibrating brings pressure back into spec. We do this on every service using a pressure gauge portafilter.
- Scale blocking the boiler or thermocoil — mineral deposits narrow water passages. This is a descaling and potentially component replacement issue.
- Internal fitting leak — pressure bleeding off before reaching the group head. Found on visual inspection.
Sign 3: Leaking — Water Where It Should Not Be
Any visible water leak outside of normal drip tray drainage warrants investigation.
Portafilter leaks (around the group head): Almost always a worn group head gasket. Gaskets are inexpensive (from $4 in our store) and replacement is DIY-friendly on most machines — call us and we will walk you through it.
Steam wand dripping when closed: Usually a worn steam valve or tip O-ring. Address it early — constant moisture accelerates corrosion on the valve seat, turning a simple fix into a more expensive one.
Internal leaks (water pooling under the machine, excess moisture in drip tray): May indicate a leaking fitting, boiler seal, or cracked tube. Do not ignore this — water near electronics is a hazard, and secondary corrosion damage compounds fast.
Sign 4: Strange Noises — Knocking, Rattling, Loud Buzzing
You learn your machine's normal sounds after using it daily. New or changed sounds are a signal worth heeding:
- Loud, labored pump noise — pump reaching end of life, or starved for water (check reservoir and inlet screen)
- Knocking or rattling inside the machine — loose component or dislodged part, often after moving or dropping the machine
- High-pitched squealing during steam — loose steam tip or valve not seating cleanly
- Rhythmic clicking during brewing (new pattern) — can indicate scale build-up in the thermocoil causing micro-stress under pressure
- No sound when pump should be running — failed pump, tripped thermal cutout, or electrical fault
Sign 5: Inconsistent Temperature — Shots Taste Different Every Time
Espresso is highly temperature-sensitive. A 2–3°C shift can swing extraction from sour to bitter. If your shots used to be consistent and are now varying with no changes in grind or dose, you have a temperature stability problem.
- Failing or drifting PID controller — a PID losing calibration causes temperature swings. We can test, recalibrate, or replace.
- Worn pressurestat — older machines use a pressurestat to control boiler temperature. A worn one has a wider differential, allowing bigger temperature swings. Inexpensive to replace.
- Scale on the heating element — uneven thermal transfer causes hot spots and inconsistent boiler temperature.
- Faulty temperature sensor — giving incorrect readings, causing the control system to heat incorrectly.
