The Baratza Encore ESP takes the most trusted entry-level grinder in specialty coffee and adds an important upgrade: stepped adjustment optimized specifically for the espresso range. Where the original Encore was primarily designed for filter coffee, the ESP variant brings its adjustment range and step increments into the tight tolerances that espresso demands — making it the go-to recommendation for espresso beginners who want a dedicated, purpose-built grinder.
Baratza is known for the repairability and longevity of their grinders, and the Encore ESP is no exception — replacement burrs and parts are readily available, and Baratza's service program is the best in the industry. If you're buying your first standalone espresso grinder and want something that will serve you well for years without complication, the Encore ESP is where we start that conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Baratza ESP vs Encore ESP Pro — what's the difference?
The original Baratza ESP is the entry version. The Encore ESP Pro is the upgraded version with the Etzinger M2 burr set (originally designed for the Virtuoso) and a wider espresso-focused grind range. Both share the dosing cup design that fits 53/54mm and 58mm portafilters. The Pro's burrs handle light roasts noticeably better.
Is this really enough grinder for "real" espresso?
For a $200 grinder paired with a $700-$1,200 machine, yes — you'll pull genuinely good shots, especially with medium roasts. For a $2,000+ machine, the Baratza ESP becomes the bottleneck. Match grinder spend to machine spend, ideally 50-75% of machine cost on the grinder.
Stepped or stepless adjustment?
Stepped, with two distinct "resolutions" — a fine-resolution espresso side and a coarser brew side. The stepped approach trades dial-in precision for ease of use; you'll find your espresso setting and stay near it. Not as flexible as stepless grinders for chasing optimal extraction across different beans.
Does it work with Breville machines?
Yes — the included dosing cup fits both 53/54mm portafilters (Bambino, Barista series) and 58mm portafilters (with the included adapter). One of the few entry grinders that explicitly handles both size ranges.
How loud is it?
Loud. The Encore platform is designed for home use but isn't insulated like a Eureka. Roughly 75-80dB during grinding — fine for daytime use, jarring at 5am next to a sleeping partner. If quiet operation matters, look at a Specialita or William.
What about retention?
Standard for the Encore platform — about 1-2g per dose. Acceptable for daily medium-roast use. If you rotate beans frequently or chase low retention specifically, consider single-dose grinders like the DF64.
Will I outgrow it?
Most buyers do, eventually. Owners on r/espresso commonly upgrade after 1-3 years to the Specialita, Atom 75, or DF64. The ESP is the right "first real espresso grinder" — it's not the right forever grinder.

🔧 Kanen Tech Take
Julian (Lead Tech): “Baratza makes really serviceable grinders. This one is a solid all-rounder — good for both espresso and filter. Parts are easy to source and Baratza actually encourages home repair, which is rare. Keep the burrs clean and you'll get consistent results for years.”
The conical burr set produces consistent grinds at espresso-fine settings. We recommend this as the first grinder upgrade when someone outgrows their built-in grinder.
