We pull machines apart every single day. The number one thing we see killing espresso machines prematurely — more than any other cause of failure — is scale buildup. Calcium and magnesium deposits from hard water slowly strangle boilers, clog valves, coat heating elements, and eventually force an expensive repair or machine replacement. The good news: descaling is easy, inexpensive, and fully preventable with a little routine.
What Is Scale and Why Does It Matter?
Scale is the hard, chalky white mineral deposit left behind when water evaporates or is heated inside your machine. Hard water — common throughout most of the United States, including the Bay Area — contains dissolved calcium carbonate and magnesium. Every time your machine heats water, these minerals precipitate out and adhere to internal surfaces: the boiler walls, heating element, thermoblocks, steam wand, solenoid valves, and group head.
Over time, scale acts as thermal insulation on your heating element — your machine has to work harder to reach temperature, increasing electricity use and stress on the heating element until it burns out. Scale also narrows water pathways, reduces flow, causes pressure fluctuations, and causes valves to stick or seize.
In our repair shop, a full boiler descale and heating element replacement runs $250–$475 depending on the machine. A bottle of Urnex Dezcal costs about $12. The math is obvious.
Signs Your Machine Has Scale Buildup
- Longer heat-up time — your machine is taking longer than usual to reach temperature
- Lower steam pressure — steam wand output is weaker or sputtering
- White chalky deposits — visible on the steam wand tip, drip tray, or water reservoir
- Inconsistent shot temperature — your espresso is cooler than normal or varies shot to shot
- Strange gurgling or hissing sounds — especially from the boiler area
- Reduced flow rate — shots running faster than normal despite no grind change
- Error codes — some modern machines throw a descale alert (Breville, Jura, DeLonghi)
How Often Should You Descale?
- Soft water (0–3 gpg): Every 3–6 months
- Moderately hard water (4–7 gpg, typical Bay Area): Every 2–3 months
- Hard water (8+ gpg): Monthly
- Using filtered or softened water: Every 4–6 months minimum

Pro tip: The single best thing you can do for your espresso machine is use filtered water. A simple Brita or water softener removes the minerals before they cause problems. The Lelit in-tank water softener is an excellent option for Lelit machine owners.
Why We Recommend Urnex Dezcal
Urnex Dezcal is what we use in our own shop on machines we service. It is formulated specifically for espresso machines — safe for seals, gaskets, and tubing — and activates in hot water to dissolve scale more effectively than vinegar. It is NSF certified, food-safe, and does not leave a residual taste or odor.
Do NOT use white vinegar. We see this advice everywhere online and it is wrong. Vinegar can degrade rubber seals and internal components over time, and the acetic acid leaves a lingering taste that takes many flush cycles to clear. Spend the $12 on Dezcal.
Step-by-Step Descaling Guide
Step 1: Empty and Clean the Machine
Remove water from the reservoir, empty the drip tray, remove the portafilter and baskets. Start clean so the solution focuses on mineral deposits, not coffee residue.
Step 2: Prepare the Solution
For Dezcal powder, dissolve 1 packet (28g) in 34 oz (1 liter) of lukewarm water. Concentration matters — too strong stresses seals; too dilute will not dissolve scale effectively. Pour into the reservoir.
Step 3: Begin the Descale Cycle
If your machine has an automatic descale mode (Breville, Jura, DeLonghi), use it. For machines without one: run the pump for 5–10 seconds through the group head, stop for 30 seconds, repeat 6–8 times. Also purge a few ounces through the steam wand. The pause-and-soak cycle gives the solution time to dissolve deposits.
Step 4: Full Flush
Once most of the solution has run through, flush the remainder continuously to clear loosened scale.
Step 5: Rinse — Do Not Skip This
Fill the reservoir with fresh water and run two full tanks through using the same intermittent pattern. Residual Dezcal will ruin your coffee flavor.
Step 6: Test Shot
Pull a test shot and discard it. Your machine is ready.
After Descaling: What to Watch For
You should notice faster heat-up, stronger steam, and more consistent shot temperature. If the machine still seems sluggish, it may have severe scale in hard-to-reach areas — inside the boiler element, solenoid valve body, or copper tubing — that requires professional cleaning.
