Sam and Khaldoun sat down in the shop and talked through the machines we sell, fix, and love. Here's what they had to say — straight from the bench.
Breville Barista Express Impress
Khaldoun: "This Breville is great. It's not really a boiler — it's a thermal block, but it's a huge one. So it heats up in 15 to 20 seconds. If you're in a rush, you can have your coffee fast. You can do back-to-back shots, same as the big dual boilers. And the taste is not bad. It's not the same as the very expensive machines, but it's giving a good shot."
Sam: "What I love about this machine for customers is the simplicity — and the value. It's also very inexpensive to maintain. It typically goes four or five years, sometimes more, before it even needs a tune-up."
Khaldoun: "It's easy to repair. Not expensive to service. The main thing we see is the solenoid valve assembly — that's the common failure. Sometimes the grinder too."
Breville Bambino
Khaldoun: "Good machine, but without the grinder. Almost the same as the Barista Express, but smaller — you can put it in your suitcase if you're traveling. The main issues are the vibration pump and the solenoid."
Sam: "It is a little harder to work on than some people expect for its price point — but we get it done."
Breville Dual Boiler
Khaldoun: "Powerful machine. Separate boilers means precise temperature for both espresso and steam. Great flavor consistency. Easy to fill with the funnel design. Very solid."
Sam: "The main maintenance item on all dual boiler Brevilles — including the Oracle — is the steam boiler seals. The o-rings wear over time. It's normal wear, like timing in a car. Otherwise, these machines last a long time."
Breville Victoria
Khaldoun: "Single boiler, so it takes a little longer to heat the steam separately. But it has a commercial portafilter, a visual PID display, a pressure gauge — features you don't always see at this price. It lasts. It gives a great shot."
Sam: "We like displays and gauges. They give you real information about what your machine is doing."
Lelit Elizabeth
Khaldoun: "I love this machine. Dual boilers, really consistent steam, consistent heat at the group head. Tune-up every three or four years. PID, pressure gauge, no-burn steam wand. Simple to repair. The main thing that goes wrong is the hoses — if they start leaking and you wait too long, the electronics can get damaged. Bring it in when you notice something."
Sam: "The Elizabeth is a quiet workhorse. Customers who own it love it."
Lelit Bianca
Khaldoun: "This is my love. I know every single part of this machine. It's very mechanical. The lever, the flow control, the rotary pump — it's the strongest pump of all the machines we talked about today. When I'm descaling it, I can open the water and walk away — it refills itself. You can plumb it or use the tank. It can handle a small business or a serious home setup."
Sam: "It's a Ferrari. Great machine, but it needs a little more attention when service time comes — more mechanical parts, more moving pieces. The no-burn wands are beautifully designed. Insulated boilers. It's just a pleasure to work on."
Grinders: Eureka Mignon Specialita
Sam: "Two timers for different doses. One thing to know: it can clog more easily, especially with oily beans. When you adjust the grind, always do it while the grinder is running — that prevents the burrs from getting stuck."
Khaldoun: "The most common service is clearing a clog or replacing the burrs after they wear."
Grinders: Eureka Atom 75
Sam: "75mm flat burrs, so it grinds faster and more consistently. Two dose timers. Quiet — people really appreciate that in the morning. This grinder almost never clogs. Great for home, and solid for light commercial use."
Grinders: Lelit William
Sam: "Powerful. Stepped adjustment — it clicks into position, so you can't dial in between steps. Some people don't love that. But it rarely clogs, and at the price point it's a great grinder without the finickiness of the Specialita."
Lelit Mara X
Khaldoun: "Good machine. Heat exchanger design — you get steam and espresso without the wait of a single boiler. We see these in the shop regularly. Solid and reliable."
